ChromeOS will gain a new default font, says website

Google is preparing a visual change for Chromebooks with ChromeOS: a new default font for the operating system. The Roboto typographic family should be replaced by Google Sans, already used in official communications by the Mountain View Giant.

The information comes from the website 9to5Google, which shared a code change found on the Chromium developers page. The description says that despite the change, Roboto will still be used on some screens that are incompatible with the new option.

Previously called Product Sans, Google Sans was launched in 2015 and has since been used on Big Tech’s official websites and advertising materials. The letter “G” in the font is even used in the company logo.

The objective of the change would be to adapt the ChromeOS interface to the Material 3 design standard, very similar to Material You — the series of guidelines used in the interface of Google applications on Android.

Still in development

The system with the new font may still take a while to reach all devices: as the change was only mentioned in the code, it must still undergo other adjustments and tests in the Beta version before the stable version is released. The original article speculates that the new feature will arrive in version 126 of ChromeOS, scheduled for June this year.

If you want to know more news about the operating system, it’s worth keeping an eye on the Google I/O conference, starting on May 14th. The company has already confirmed a talk about ChromeOS to address the “future direction of the system” and should talk about partnerships with computer manufacturers — see what to expect from the event, which will also feature news about Android 15, Android TV and other products .
