Botafogo will put an end to the season today (3), in a friendly with Crystal Palace, at Selhurst Park, in an agenda that ends the tour of England. The trip and the duel with teams from the Old Continent may sound like a novelty to younger fans, but they were already a tradition in Alvinegro and with reflections to the present day.

Auriel de Almeida, Glorioso’s historian, points out that the image that the club has from the outside is a very strong remnant of the tours carried out in the 50’s and 60’s, citing, in a good-humored tone, the “Harlem Globetrotters”, a basketball team who travels the world making exhibition games

“When talking about Botafogo tours, those of the 50s and 60s were the most important. The view that the outside world has of Botafogo is due to this period. Barely comparing, we can joke that it was like the Globetrotters of football. Botafogo called the public,” he said.

The commitments for 2022 took place through John Textor, owner of 90% of the shares of SAF do Glorioso and also manager of Crystal Palace. Since when the businessman acquired General Severiano’s club, there have been actions with the English and with Molenbeek, from Belgium, another one under the command of the American.

The first time Glorioso packed its bags and crossed borders was in 1936 when it played nine games between Mexico and the United States. In the case of Europe, the inaugural landing was in 1955, with 18 friendlies in an itinerary that had Spain, France, Denmark, Holland, Switzerland, Italy and Czechoslovakia, according to information from the blog “Mundo Botafogo”. That delegation had names like Garrincha, Nilton Santos, Gerson and Quarentinha.

This will be Botafogo’s fourth time in England – previous opportunities were in 1956, 1989 and 1991. On these tours, he faced several clubs, such as Fulham, Burley, West Ham and Cardiff City.

Adding up all the clashes against the English – not just those held in England –, to date, there are 16 wins, four draws and only two defeats, with 58 goals scored and 27 conceded, according to data collected by Auriel.
