During a conversation with co-star Christopher Atkins, Shields opened up about the game and talked about the backstage of the production.

You know the movie The Blue Lagoon, right? One of the greatest classics of the 1980s, the work was responsible for packing the Afternoon Sessions of countless people, delivering a plot about two young people who need to survive on a desert island after a tragic shipwreck.

Despite the distance to its release, recently, the feature film came back under the spotlight due to Brooke Shields, actress who at the age of 14 gave life to the character Emmeline, protagonist of the plot. According to her, despite the film having its qualities, it would hardly be aired today, since we live in a time of greater problematization in relation to certain subjects.

“The Blue Lagoon would not be allowed nowadays. Never again will a film like this be made. It would not be allowed”said the star, during a conversation with her co-star, Christopher Atkins, on the podcast “Now What?”.

“Animals were harmed in the film. We were catching fish and all kinds of crazy stuff. Children ran naked on the beach. We couldn’t do that now.”completes Atkins, reinforcing the actress’ speech.

“From the age of 40 they take us out of the market”, laments Brooke Shields, from A Lagoa Azul

For those who don’t remember, in addition to the aforementioned, some highly sexualized scenes put Emmeline and Richard – the character played by Atkins – in situations that would certainly suffer with the public today. In the interview, Brooke also revealed that she went through some difficulties during the recordings, mainly because she always had to be alert to cover her breasts with her hair, since her character spent a large part of the length naked from the waist up.

It’s worth noting that the film adaptation of the 1908 book, written by Henry De Vere Stacpoole, received numerous negative reviews upon release, yet still managed to gross $58.8 million at the global box office. While Christopher received a Golden Globe nomination in the Breakthrough Actor category for his performance, Shields won the Golden Raspberry Award for Worst Actress.

“The years that followed were pure insanity”, also said Atkins, who suffered from alcoholism until 1986, when he went through a period of rehabilitation. To this day, the star continues to attend three AA meetings a week.
