The mayor of Lisbon said that today he asked for a review of prices and projects for the World Youth Day (WYD) and that, from now on, he will coordinate “everything directly”.

“I asked everyone today to look again at prices, to look again at all projects”, said the social democrat at the entrance to the Conference “Local Power, PRR and Decentralization” in Vila Nova de Gaia, in the district of Harbor.

The mayor revealed that he had ordered the engineers and those who are working every day to review “everything they can” in the projects, but within “what is necessary”.

However, the social democrat guaranteed that he does not give up on security. And he added: “we have to have safe stages, stages that really have the capacity to have all the safety criteria for an event like this”.

Reaffirming that the Lisbon Chamber will not invest more than 35 million euros in WYD, Moedas recalled having been “the first politician” to say that one should be “very careful” with the expense.

The mayor also assumed that, from now on, he will directly coordinate everything that will be done. “Therefore, I am the coordinator. I will directly coordinate everything that will be done from now on”, he stressed.

The World Youth Day, considered the biggest event of the Catholic Church, will take place this year in Lisbon, between the 1st and 6th of August, with around 1.5 million people expected.

The main ceremonies of the day take place in Parque Tejo, north of Parque das Nações, on the riverside of the Tagus, on land in the municipalities of Lisbon and Loures.

The days were born on the initiative of Pope John Paul II, after the success of the meeting promoted in 1985, in Rome, in the International Year of Youth.
