Belgian production “Megalomaniac” wins Best Film Award at Fantasporto 2023

Still in the Fantastic Cinema category, “Demigod: The Legend Begins”, by Chris Huang Wen-Chang (Taiwan), was the winner of the Special Jury Prize.

Eline Shumacher, in “Megalomaniac”, and Tom Hughes, in “Sheperd” (UK), were elected best actress and actor, respectively, while the latter’s production also collected the award for Best Screenplay.

“Incubus”, by Tito Fernandes (Portuguese film co-produced with the United Kingdom), won the Grand Prize dedicated to short films.

The award dedicated to Best Screenplay went to “Convenience Story”, by Satoshi Miki (Japan) and “Sheperd” won Best Cinematography, while “Stone Turtle”, by Woo Ming Jin (Malaysia) received an honorable mention from the jury.

In the official Orient Express section, the Filipino production “cargo”, by TM Malones, won the Orient Express Grand Prize, with “Stone Turtle” receiving the Special Jury Prize.

Among Directors’ Week, the Best Film Award went to “Narcosis”, by the Dutchman Martijn de Jong, and the Special Jury Prize to “Kaymak”, by Milcho Manchevksi (Denmark/Netherlands/Croatia/North Macedonia) .

Hans Herbots, with the Belgian, Dutch and German co-production “Ritual”, was distinguished with the Best Director Award and “The Game”, by Peter Fazakas (Hungary) won Best Screenplay.

Zsolt Nagy, in “The Game”, and Thekla Reuten, in “Narcosis”, received the Best Actor and Best Actress of the Directors’ Week Awards, respectively.

The Directors’ Week Special Jury Mention went to the Hungarian production “The Grandson”.

Among the unofficial awards, the Japanese “Immersion”, by Takashi Shimizu, and “Life of Mariko In Kabukicho”, by Eiji Uchida and Shinzo Katayama, collected, respectively, the Critics Award and the Audience Award.

Ferdinand Lapuz, Krzysztof Zanussi, Elmo Nuganen and Anthony Waller were honored with the 2023 Fantasporto Career Awards.
