For every 49 tons of gold mined, around 50,000 tons of chemicals are deposited in rivers. According to Instituto Escolhas, in 2021, 54% of the gold traded in Brazil had evidence of illegality at its origin.

Such a problem has made communities in the Yanomami Reserve face a humanitarian crisis, with serious cases of malnutrition and infections such as malaria and tungiasis. Now, to raise the issue on the subject, indigenous peoples decided to call the attention of Oscar-nominated artists.

What will be done?

The Yanomami will send figurines in the shape of the deity Omama to the winners of the most renowned awards in world cinema, which takes place this Sunday (12th), in the United States.

Before that, however, 20 of the main Oscar nominees will receive a video message from Junior Hekurari Yanomami, leader of the Urihi Yanomami Association – see below.

Among the impacted actors are names like Ana de Armas, Angela Bassett, Brendan Fraser, Cate Blanchett, Colin Farrell and Jamie Lee Curtis.

The action was created by the Brazilian agency DM9. Watch the video:
