With Ursula von der Leyen, president of the European Commission in office, already in the race, the Socialists organized a congress in the Italian capital to choose Luxembourger Nicolas Schmit, who is the Commissioner for Employment and Social Rights, as the candidate of the European Socialist Party ( FEET).

The resigning prime minister and former general secretary of the PS, António Costa, will speak shortly after the opening ceremony of the congress, scheduled for around 09:00 local time (08:00 in Lisbon).

Also participating are the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez (who is also secretary general of the PSOE), and his counterparts from Germany, Olaf Scholz, and Denmark, Mette Frederiksen.

The president of the PES and former Prime Minister of Sweden, Stefan Löfven, and the president of the Socialists & Democrats in the EP, Iratxe García Pérez, are also present at the Rome congress.

Schmit announced in January that he wanted to be the candidate of the political family that also includes the PS in the European elections in June, which will decide not only the composition of the European Parliament in the next legislature, but also that of the community executive.

The European Commission is today headed by von der Leyen, from the European People’s Party (PPE), and who will predictably be the “Spitzenkandidaten” of that political group, to which PSD and CDS-PP belong.
