Family protests for justice after death of quilombola

The family of the woman killed after being run over and dragged by a car in Camaçari, in the Metropolitan Region of Salvador (RMS), protested for justice this Thursday (21). The suspect was charged with manslaughter, but was not arrested.

Quilombola Elissandra Reis was in Quilombo de Cordoaria, located in the Vila de Abrantes neighborhood, when she was hit by the vehicle last Sunday (17).

Information obtained by TV Bahia indicates that the case occurred between 8:30 pm and 9 pm that night. Elissandra was run over while heading towards a party.

The driver allegedly stopped the car, reversed the vehicle and ran over the woman, who was trapped and dragged for around 1 km.

According to the report, the driver was warned that the woman was under the car, took the key out of the ignition and left the scene.

Elissandra was taken to the Camaçari General Hospital, also in RMS, but died on Monday morning (18). Bueca, as she was better known, left four children — three of them aged 10, 9 and 5.

Faced with the case, residents staged a protest on Tuesday (19) and again this Thursday (21), with posters calling for justice.

The victim’s sister, Tamara Santos, charged the authorities and stressed that she was unaware of any previous relationship between Elissandra and the suspect.

“I hope justice, that he pays for what he did, [porque] he’s going to do it with another family.”

The Civil Police opened an investigation at the 26th Territorial Police Station (DT/Vila de Abrantes). So far, witnesses who witnessed the action and also the driver of the vehicle have been interviewed.

The man appeared accompanied by a lawyer and, as the arrest period had already passed, he was released shortly after giving his statement. He was charged with homicide while driving a vehicle.
