Rivaldo Barbosa and the brothers Domingos Inácio Brazão and João Francisco Inácio Brazão were arrested this Sunday, 24th, as suspects in the death of Marielle
Sunday, the 24th, was marked by the arrest of Rivaldo Barbosa and the brothers Domingos Inácio Brazão and João Francisco Inácio Brazão. They are suspected of involvement in the murder by Marielle Franco, Brazilian activist and politician.
Domingos Brazão, reports G1, works as an advisor to the State Court of Auditors (TCE-RJ). In the 1990s, he worked at the Rio City Council as a parliamentary advisor. In 1996, he won a seat in the Rio City Council. In addition, he was a state deputy. Between 1999 and 2015, he was in the Legislative Assembly of Rio (Alerj).
When nominated for a seat at the State Court of Auditors (TCE), in 2015, Domingos already responded to a process which involves abuse of economic power and the buying of votes through a family NGO in Rio de Janeiro.
It was also subject of a complaint by deputy Cidinha Campos, in 2014, due to threat. During the exchange of insults, he admitted to having killed someone. However, he was reportedly acquitted on grounds of self-defense.
“Yes, I killed someone. But that was over 30 years ago, when I was 22 years old. It was a criminal who had gone to my street, to my house, on my birthday, to me and my family. Justice ruled me right”, he said, as reported by Metropoles.
Domingos Brazão’s name was also involved in Operation Quinto do Ouro, which investigates a bribery scheme. Removed from TCE-RJ in 2017, he ended up in prison. Last year, he returned to the body after a vote by the Private Law Chamber. He still responds to the suspicion.
It is worth remembering that the politician had already been mentioned in the Marielle case in 2018. At the time, he was suspected of hindering the investigation with a false witness. The following year, the Attorney General’s Office charged him with obstruction of justice, however, the case did not move forward.
Chiquinho Brazão
Another politician arrested this Sunday, the 24th, is João Francisco Inácio Brazão. Known as Chiquinho Brazão, he is Domingos’ brother. In addition to being a gas station entrepreneur, he served as a councilor at the Rio City Council through the MDB.
In 2018, he was elected to work in the Chamber of Deputies through Avante. In 2022, he ended up re-elected through União Brasil. Last year, he left the Chamber to lead the Municipal Community Action Secretariat. He ended up being exonerated in February this year.
Rivaldo Barbosa
A third man arrested in connection with the case is delegate Rivaldo Barbosa, graduated in law. In 2018, he was appointed head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro. At the time, he was coordinator of the Homicide Division.
