Families of Marielle and Anderson speak to Fantástico about prisons

O Fantastic also heard from the councilor’s family, such as her mother, Marinete Franco. “There’s no way you can measure a mother’s pain, understand? The pain that we feel, because it is a part of us that is gone”, she said, at the time. “It won’t go unpunished, I don’t want it to go unpunished”, he added.

Aghata Arnaus, Anderson Gomes’ wife, almost fainted when she received news of the crime. Mônica Benício, Marielle’s wife at the time, could barely speak.

“A friend of ours was here at the door, who came to tell me. But when I opened the gate and saw Dani’s face, I said: ‘Dani, what happened, where is Marielle? She says, you need to be strong, Marielle died,’” he said.

Six years and 10 days later the Fantastic spoke again with Anderson and Marielle’s family. The councilor’s mother, Marinete, reveals that one of those arrested for participating in the crime, the former head of the Civil Police Rivaldo Barbosa he committed to me and my husband that “it was a matter of honor” for him to resolve the case and that it was important to clarify everything as soon as possible.

Rivaldo’s participation also surprised Mônica.

“The feeling is one of pain overturned in these 6 years and 10 days, and also of revolt. The big surprise was the name, the appearance of Rivaldo Barbosa’s name,” he says.

In addition to Rivaldo, the Federal Police also arrested federal deputy Chiquinho Brazão (União Brasil) and the counselor at the Rio Court of Auditors, Domingos Brazão, identified as masterminds of the crime. For the PF, Rivaldo is one of the execution mentors.

“And today I discover that that man who welcomed me with a fraternal smile, saying he knew Marielle, even being Marielle’s friend… What remains is a feeling of revolt that everything happened in a barbaric way and arriving at answers like this, that we know that authorities who should have been committed to clarifying this not only failed to let it happen, but were later responsible for not clarifying it quickly”, says Mônica.

The outrage over the former delegate’s participation is the same among Mariele’s mother and her sister, the Minister of Racial Equality, Anielle Franco.

“No one deserves to die like she was murdered. And people have the coldness to plan, give their approval and sit down with my mother to have coffee and say that we will solve the case. What kind of world are we living in?” says Anielle, referring to Rivaldo.

Marinete, Marielle’s mother, says that Rivaldo hugged and comforted her during the investigation. His discovery as a participant in the crime generated a feeling of betrayal for the family.

“We were betrayed, it’s not just betrayed… I think it was an agent, a security man, a man who had, at the time, enormous power to be able to advance the case”, he told Fantástico.

Anielle Franco says she feels tired and indignant, that the arrests took her back to the day of the crime. “When I received the news, that I went to the scene of the crime, that I went to the IML the next day, at 6am, and went to my sister’s wake and I had to stand, I don’t know if I I’ve already found strength, it feels like I’m reliving this moment today. And then it gives you a lump in your throat”, she says.

“I have an upset stomach. It’s the indignation of human beings, sisters, ministers, whatever, there’s no way to separate it. It’s impossible to separate my feelings today”, he adds.

For Aghata, Anderson’s widow, the day was also full of pain.

“It is inevitable to remember what happened when I was warned, what I thought. Everything in these six years, the moments we had talking to authorities, going to places to resolve issues. Then come all the memories, all the feelings. You can’t be calm, it’s not a peaceful day”, says Aghata.

Anderson’s widow says that You want to know everything to have an understanding of the story from beginning to end.

In Brasília, Fernanda Chaves spoke with the team at Fantastic and said what he expects from now on. “People need to be held accountable, judged and responded to the height the case deserves,” she says.

Mônica says that Marielle’s death speaks about democracy and the answers that must be given.

“The fight for justice for Marielle is a fight that, unfortunately, will not end with a police investigation. The Brazilian State owes these answers to democracy, to every Brazilian and to us, to thousands of Marielles and Andersons”, says Mônica.

Asked how Marielle would react upon learning of the entire plot revealed by the Federal Police, Anielle says it would be a mix of anger and indignation. “It’s difficult to talk, but I would be acting too, as much as we are. Because if there’s one thing we have in our family, it’s not to lower our heads. And it won’t even be one day today, with so much anger, indignation and revolt, that will make us stop”, she says.
