The arrest of delegate Rivaldo Barbosa, former head of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro, suspected of the murder of councilwoman Mariele Franco, brought back to Roraima’s delegate, Giuliana Castro, memories of a clash between the two in 2018. She published the report on social media and assessed the moment as a case of machismo.

“In 2018, I was in a meeting with Police Chiefs from all over Brazil. At the time of my speech, I suffered sexist attitudes and was being interrupted all the time by the then RJ police chief, who was being disrespectful and sexist towards me. I drew his attention and had an argument with him, it was a heated situation, they intervened, but it was necessary to command respect. The name of the sexist Delegate: Rivaldo Barbosa”, says delegate Giuliana in the publication.

The delegate held the position of general delegate of Roraima at the time and was the only woman at the meeting who held a leadership role. To Folha, she explains that everyone exposed ideas and reports without interruption, but while she was talking about the operation of the corporation in Roraima, she was constantly interrupted, especially by Rivaldo.

“In the face of these interruptions, I was forced to stop my position and question, and we had a clash over these interruptions. What happened was that I stopped and questioned, and I imposed myself and said: sir, I didn’t interrupt you, no one interrupted, no man was interrupted in his speech, and you just made your explanation. I would like you to respect my speech and I would like to know why I, the only woman present here, am being interrupted all the time by you, especially. And I would like this to stop, because this characterizes the machismo present at this meeting”, explained the delegate.

The delegate explains that she asked the president of the National Council of Civil Police Chiefs for a reprimand, but it was not granted. However, Rivaldo was asked to stop interrupting her.

After the moment of tension and embarrassment, the delegate details that she was praised by her colleagues for her position. Furthermore, her notes were respected and even applied. For example, the visual identity of the Civil Police, which was suggested by Roraima.

“My speech was not taken into account machismo, but rather, the lack of respect for my person there. But, of course, that was a sexist attitude, after all, I was the only woman who was being interrupted, I was the only woman present and the only general delegate of the Civil Police, who was being interrupted”, she highlighted.

Regarding Rivaldo’s arrest, on the personal side, the delegate says she felt proud of her position at that meeting. She also regretted that a Civil Police delegate was involved in this case.

“It is regrettable that a police chief, a Civil Police delegate, uses his position to carry out criminal acts, not only to impede the investigation, but also to help commit these criminal acts, as the indictment says, and this is really regrettable in every way. But, on the other hand, today the feeling, not just mine, but that of our entire nation, is that justice is being served in the case of councilor Marielle Franco”, he concluded.
