The accident that caused the young woman’s death occurred at 9:56 pm, on highway 16, at kilometer 1,100 towards Cascais-Sintra, and resulted from a collision between two vehicles, the GNR said in a statement.

As part of Operation “Easter 2024”, the GNR military carried out between 00:00 and 23:59 on Thursday several “intensive inspection and patrolling” operations on the country’s roads so that drivers “arrive at their locations destination safely”.

According to the data, 4,910 drivers were inspected, 25 of which were driving with excess alcohol and, of these, 10 were arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l.

It also highlights that 21 administrative offenses were due to lack of or incorrect use of a seat belt or car seat and 44 were due to lack of mandatory civil liability insurance.

The GNR advises “attentive, cautious and defensive driving, so that the festive period can be spent safely”.

To travel safely during this festive season, the GNR advises, in particular, “to adapt the speed to the weather conditions, the condition of the road and the volume of road traffic” and “to avoid maneuvers that could result in traffic obstruction or that, in some way, could lead to accidents”.

It also adds, in the statement, that “it will be particularly concerned about the risky behavior of drivers, especially those that put their safety and that of third parties at risk.”

Therefore, the Guard’s military personnel will be particularly attentive to dangerous maneuvers, such as driving under the influence of alcohol and psychotropic substances, speeding, overtaking maneuvers, as well as the inappropriate use of cell phones, failure to use a seat belt and child seat and vehicle safety conditions.
