The collision occurred during the “Cristo Vive” walk, a procession carried out by the Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro Church. The faithful were run over by the minibus while walking down Avenida Barreto de Menezes, in a stretch known as “Adelaide hill”, as it is close to the Adelaide Pessoa Câmara High School Reference School.

Who were the four dead?

The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) did not disclose the names of the victims, but reported that the people who died in the accident were:

  • A 75-year-old man, who succumbed to his injuries during treatment;
  • A 51-year-old man, who also died while being treated by rescuers;
  • Two people of unknown age and sex, who died before receiving care.

Run over during procession in Jaboatão leaves dead and injured

Images sent to TV Globo show the minibus stopped after the accident, as well as bodies on the sidewalk and in the street, and injured people receiving first aid from civil firefighters (see video above).

Where were the injured taken?

Activated at 4:57 pm, Samu sent 10 ambulances from the cities of Recife, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Recife, Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Moreno. The Fire Department sent eight vehicles to the scene of the accident after being called around 5 pm.

Samu reported that it treated three injured people and took them all to Hospital da Restauração, in the Derby neighborhood, in the central area of ​​Recife. The victims’ names were not released, but they were rescued alive:

  • A 67-year-old man;
  • A 53-year-old woman;
  • A 50 year old woman.

Other injured people were taken to three Emergency Care Units (UPAs): Engenho Velho, Imbiribeira and Barra de Jangada. Information about the patients’ health status was not disclosed until the last update of this report.

What was the line and route of the minibus?

  • The minibus on line 118 – Marcos Freire/Barra de Jangada, which has authorization from the municipality to circulate as complementary transport, was carrying passengers at the time of the accident (see video above);
  • The vehicle left the Marcos Freire bus terminal square and headed towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro;
  • To g1, by phone, the secretary of Social Services of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Maria Jacinta da Silva, confirmed that the minibus lacked brakes during the journey.

What happened to the driver?

The driver of the minibus fled after the collision, but was identified by the Jaboatão dos Guararapes city hall, which did not release his name. In a statement, the Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat reported that “locating the driver is a priority for the Civil Police.”

In a statement, in addition to regretting what happened, the state government stated that the case is being investigated by the Plantão de Prazeres Police Station, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. Furthermore, he reported that he sent teams from the Military Fire Department, the Criminalistics Institute (IC) and the Military, Civil and Scientific police to the scene of the accident.

What did Jaboatão city hall do after the accident?

The city of Jaboatão informed, in a note, that it sent teams from the Municipal Guard, Civil Defense and the Department of Social Assistance to the scene of the accident and that it collaborates “so that the investigations proceed with due rigor”. He also said that Mayor Mano Medeiros (PL) “determined that assistance and health teams carry out a sweep to identify the injured and the victims’ families and provide all necessary support to these people.”

Has the Catholic Church commented on what happened?

Also in a note, the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife stated that:

  • He received the news of the serious accident with regret and sympathizes with Father Paulo, the community’s parish priest, “as well as with the entire bereaved community in this moment of pain”;
  • “At the time of the accident, Father Paulo offered the sacraments to those involved who were victims and the parish is providing the necessary support to everyone”;
  • Expresses solidarity, placing itself “alongside all the victims involved in this accident, accompanying them with our prayers and our efforts”;
  • It is available “to collaborate with the victims and their families, helping and contributing to overcoming this fatality”;
  • It requires public authorities that “the situation be investigated, with everyone involved in the accident held duly responsible.”
