A drone launched by the pro-Iranian Iraqi Islamic Resistance militia struck a building in Eilat today, causing no casualties, after anti-aircraft alarms sounded in the southern Israeli city.
The Iraqi Islamic Resistance, an alliance of Shiite militias, has already claimed responsibility for the attack, which it said was part of actions against Israel, in response to the Israeli offensive against the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The Iraqi group has claimed several attacks against Israeli cities and against US military bases in Iraq and Syria, one of which caused the death of three US soldiers.
“Following the alert about the infiltration of a hostile aircraft in the city of Eilat and the region, the Israel Defense Forces identified a suspicious aerial device that entered the territory of the State of Israel from the east,” the Israeli army said.
The unmanned aerial device, known as a drone, “caused an impact in the Gulf of Eilat area, there were no casualties and minor damage was caused to a structure”, added the army, on the social network X (formerly Twitter).
Previously, Israeli authorities had activated anti-aircraft alarms in Eilat and asked the population to seek refuge, due to the presence of a possible drone launched by Yemen’s Huthi rebels.
The war in Gaza was triggered by an unprecedented attack by Hamas on Israeli soil, on October 7, 2023, which caused around 1,200 deaths, the vast majority of them civilians, and close to two hundred hostages, according to Israeli authorities. .
Israel promised to annihilate Hamas and launched a military operation in the Gaza Strip that has already caused nearly 32,000 deaths, said the Palestinian Islamist group.
