I’ve always been intrigued by that episode where a scorpion is lit on fire and it commits suicide. Intuition told me that an animal would never exterminate its own life. I did some research and my suspicions were confirmed: there is no animal that kills its own life!

What happens is that, when the scorpion he is cornered in a circle of fire, he seems to throw the sting at the body, in an apparent suicide. But that’s not what happens. The animal becomes agitated by the high temperature around it and loses control of its tail, giving the impression that it is trying to kill itself, as it dies of dehydration due to the heat, as explained by César Ades, ethologist (student of animal behavior), from Usp (Universidade Paulista): “These beliefs have no foundation. Evolution tends to select organisms that have individual survival mechanisms, not life interruption mechanisms.”(1).

In this way, intentional self-extermination does not make sense among irrational animals, but it would, unfortunately, be a prerogative of the human animal, the human being. The rationality we have makes us capable of predicting and precipitating our death.

However, experience shows us that when human beings think about ending their own lives, they actually DO NOT WISH TO DIE. He just wants to LEAVE THE SCENE, thinking that, in this way, he will end the suffering that plagues his spirit. This is because wishing for death is against our conservation instinct, an automatism that is part of the natural law, the divine law. In fact, no one wants to die! Simply, the person is feeling overwhelmed, distressed, needy, without direction.

If you sometimes think about leaving the scene, think about the word LIFE. There is no opposite word for LIFE. LIFE is always LIFE, whether we are incarnated or disembodied. Spiritism teaches us that life is eternal, because we we are immortal spirits, we are walking on a path that has no return. Always forward and upward.

“I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly,” the Christ(two) tells us. Ask for help when you are disconsolate. Look for the meaning of your life, do good, work on a cause to help others. Get out of your unhealthy circle and try to help those who are disconsolate around you. This is what Jesus encourages us to do: develop the LOVE that already exists within us, but is dormant. Thus, seeking first the Kingdom of God, the rest will be added to us by merit(3).

Dear readers, it is so beautiful to see the spiritual principle, still in its beginnings, fighting to maintain physical life, simply obeying the Law of God(4)while we, Spirits already at an advanced stage of spiritual life, often waste the divine opportunities for growth that an incarnation offers us.

Think about it, friend, as it is in the famous Parable of Jesus, don’t bury this great talent(5) which is physical life. An asset was lent to us by the Creator to progress and get closer to Him in intelligence, love and wisdom!

Brotherly hugs and much peace to everyone!!
