A Civil police and the Military police in São Paulo investigate the death of a plainclothes military police officer who was shot by another police officer during a patrol action in Vila Andrade, south of São Paulo, on the night of Friday, 29.

Rahoney de Paula Vieira, 31, was off duty and approached a car. He pointed a gun at the vehicle’s occupants when he was shot by another officer who thought it was a robbery.

What happened before the PM corporal was killed?
Although he was without his military uniform and, apparently, off duty, PM Vieira, from the 4th Shock Battalion, approached a vehicle stopped on Rua Maria José da Conceição and pointed a gun at the car’s occupants. A team from the 16th Battalion of The police officer who was patrolling the area found the scene strange and, thinking it was a robbery, intervened.. One of the agents shot him.
When did the police realize it was another police officer?
After Vieira fell to the ground, the police officers on duty approached and, realizing that he was a colleague, tried to revive him without success.
Images taken by residents show the moment when one of the police officers puts both hands to his head, in despair. They even took their colleague to the emergency room at Albert Einstein Hospital, also in the south zone, but he did not survive his injuries.
Where did the dead PM work?
The deceased PM corporal was part of the police Special Operations Center (COE). Vieira has been married since 2021 and has a son.
Is the case being investigated?
The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat (SSP) stated that the facts relating to the case are still being investigated by the Military Police, through a Military Police Investigation (IPM) and by the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP).
No details were given about the circumstances of the police action. “To date, the police officer involved has not been removed. The Civil Police awaits the results of the reports, which are being prepared for analysis and will hear witnesses to clarify all the circumstances of the case”, said the SSP this Monday, 1st.
