ANDIn a statement, Taiwan’s military authorities said they had asked their soldiers on Erdan Island to “increase their vigilance” in response to “provocations from Chinese Internet users who frequently use drones.” [aparelhos não tripulados]”.

Erdan is just five kilometers off the Chinese coast and is part of the Kinmen archipelago.

Beijing claims sovereignty over Taiwan, which it considers a province of the People’s Republic of China, and does not exclude the use of force for reunification.

The People’s Republic of China and Taiwan have lived as two autonomous territories since 1949, when the former Chinese nationalist government took refuge on the island, following its defeat in the civil war against the communists.

Since Tsai Ing-wen’s election as president of Taiwan in 2016, China has intensified military pressure on Taipei, resorting to what experts describe as “gray zone” interventions, i.e. intimidation tactics without going that far. like war.

Tensions between China and Taiwan have also increased since the presidential election of Lai Ching-te in January, who Beijing considers a separatist.

In addition to almost daily pressure from China’s Air Force and Navy, Taiwan also faces intrusions from unidentified civilian drones that surveil and harass its troops.

In an informative note, the Kinmen Defense Command said that military training in the use of ‘drones’ will be reinforced, including the adoption of “appropriate countermeasures based on the level of threat”.

This statement comes a week after local media outlets released a video on the YouTube platform that showed Taiwanese soldiers and some military installations in Erdan.

The video was accompanied by the following caption: “Taiwanese soldiers on Erdan Island are scared by a Chinese ‘drone’.”

Near the Kinmen Islands, a Chinese boat capsized in February while being pursued by Taiwan’s coast guard, throwing its four passengers into the water, two of whom died.

In 2022, Taiwanese soldiers in Kinmen shot down an unidentified civilian ‘drone’ amid rising tensions with China following a visit to Taipei by Nancy Pelosi, then speaker of the United States House of Representatives (lower house of Congress).
