“We are fully aware that the information presented here is far from portraying reality, as there are still many companies that do not report the occurrence of accidents, thus limiting workers’ or their dependents’ access to their rights”, said the minister of Labor and Social Security of Mozambique, Margarida Talapa, during the national conference on safety and health at work, held today in Maputo.

In 2023, 12 fewer deaths were recorded from accidents at work compared to 2022, with 26 deaths, and a reduction in more than 400 accidents, compared to the 1,176 registered in the previous year.

According to Margarida Talapa, in addition to the 14 deaths, of the 731 work accidents recorded in 2023, a total of 561 resulted in temporary incapacity for workers, 73 in partial permanent incapacity and 83 in permanent incapacity.

The minister also warned about the impact of climate change on safety and health at work, calling on companies to adopt protective practices and improve accident reporting mechanisms in the sector.

“We appeal to professionals who work in the area of occupational health and safety to define mechanisms for the mass dissemination of strategies to raise awareness among employers about the need to create plans to protect workers from diseases related to exposure to heat”, added the minister.

Every 15 seconds at least one worker dies in the world as a result of an accident at work or an occupational disease, resulting in 6,300 deaths per day and around 2.3 million per year, said the Mozambican Minister of Labor, pointing out estimates of the International Labor Organization (ILO).
