Environment Secretariat monitors duck deaths; State is notified

The Municipal Department of Environment and Agriculture has been monitoring and adopting measures since the beginning of April regarding occurrences of duck deaths in the Bosque Prefeita Maria Thereza lagoon (site of the former zoo), in the central region of Limeira. The state government has already been notified, as the State Department of the Environment is responsible for managing this wild animal.

Secretary of the department, Reinaldo Belussi, explains that, at the beginning of April, 15 duck deaths were found in the lagoon. On that occasion and immediately, the Department of the Environment requested an analysis of the water from BRK Ambiental, to find out if there was any situation, for example, of sewage leaking into the lagoon.

The deaths occurred shortly after heavy rain in Limeira. The BRK report presented a negative result, which demonstrated that the lagoon was in adequate condition. Furthermore, a necropsy procedure was carried out on one of the birds and nothing was found.

Earlier this week, the situation occurred again, with the death of three other ducks. “The migratory aspect of the bird makes it difficult to know whether the dead animals were already in the lagoon when the incident occurred at the beginning of the month”, reports the secretary.

Belussi states that the Agricultural Defense Office (EDA), an agency of the State Secretariat for the Environment, was notified. Technicians went to the forest yesterday (24) and found that there were no sick animals of the same species, which made it difficult to pinpoint any diagnosis.

Regarding the migratory aspect, last week there were 16 ducks in the lagoon and today (25) six are there.
The Municipal and State Departments of the Environment, through the EDA, remain on alert, monitoring the situation.
