Last Tuesday, April 23rd, Netflix added another very interesting series to its catalog. We are talking about On the Gold Route (Brigantiin the original), Italian miniseries that features six electrifying episodes of lots of action, adventure and drama.

The Netflix project delves deep into the picturesque landscape of 19th century, post-Unification southern Italy. The narrative follows the epic journey of a courageous woman, forced to flee her previous life and join a peculiar group of fighters.

Little by little, she transforms into a formidable and strategic leader, challenging social norms and the status quo as she fights to reclaim the southern gold and restore hope among the oppressed peasants.

On the Gold Route: ending of the Netflix series explained

At the end of On the Gold Routeunder the determined leadership of Felomina, the group of brigands devises a cunning plan to steal the gold that represents both the wealth and the oppression that plagues the southern Italian region.

The discovery of the gold cache in the city’s central church triggers a series of events that test the loyalty and courage of the protagonists. While Felomina, Michelina and the other brigands distract Fumel’s forces in a firefight outside, Schiavone and Francesco Guerra infiltrate the church through a secret tunnel known only to Felomina.

The plan is executed with precision, with Schiavone and Guerra managing to steal the gold while the battle serves as a distraction. However, Michelina, the group’s leader, is seriously injured during the battle and ends up being captured by enemy forces.. His fate is uncertain at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Schiavone, also known as Sparrowhawk, reveals his true nature by choosing gold over loyalty to his fellow brawlers. Despite having apparently sided with the group in their fight to liberate the land, Sparrowhawk turns against them by escaping with all the stolen gold.

Open ending

Michelina’s capture provides an opportunity for a rescue storyline in the series’ eventual second season, should it happen (no confirmation yet).

As Felomina and the other brawlers face the challenge of freeing their leader and friend, they are also faced with the difficult task of dealing with Sparrowhawk’s betrayal and the consequences of his actions.

Additionally, the revelation of Sparrowhawk’s true motivations for his betrayal adds a layer of complexity to the character. His quest for gold is not just for material wealth, but also for love and redemption, as he uses the fortune to free his lover from the clutches of Carmine Crocco.

Thus, the end of On the Gold Route ends the season with an exciting cliffhanger for a possible renewal of the series.
