The Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation (ICMBio) is carrying out, on Friday (26), a cleaning effort to remove invasive exotic species spider lily (Hymenocallis sp.) and lead vine (Cuscuta sp.), in Fernando de Noronha. The action takes place in the Praia do Sueste mangrove, starting at 8:30 am.

According to researchers, these species harm the island’s ecosystem. The Southeast is home to the only mangrove forest on oceanic islands in the South Atlantic: the mangrove is around 1.5 hectares and is part of the National Marine Park area.

According to the organizers of the task force, the removal of these plants is part of the work to conserve the local ecosystem. The activity is promoted by the ICMBio Noronha flora research team, but residents can also participate.

ICMBio’s guidance is that participants in the joint effort bring water, a hat and repellent. The institute also recommends the use of closed pants and shoes, as this is essential to deal with the dense mangrove vegetation and to protect against possible insect bites.

In addition to reducing the presence of invasive species, the objective of the joint effort is to raise awareness among the island’s population about the damage caused by these exotic plants to the biodiversity of Fernando de Noronha.
