ANDHidden among Antarctica’s glaciers, fiery Mount Erebus is Earth’s southernmost active volcano, providing a bit of warmth amid an icy landscape.
Antarctica has 138 volcanoes, according to a 2017 study cited by United Press International, but only about nine are active right now.
However, with an elevation of 3,794 meters, Mount Erebus is the best known and together with two other volcanoes forms Ross Island. It is said that when it was discovered in 1841 during Captain James Clark Ross’s voyage, it was erupting.
The volcano regularly pumps out clouds of gas and steam and is known for ejecting blocks of partially molten rock, known as “volcanic bombs.” These are gas explosions that pulverize small gold crystals – according to scientists, it is estimated that the volcano throws out around 80 grams of gold per day – which is equivalent to around 6,000 dollars (5,500 euros).
Gold has already been found hundreds of kilometers from Mount Erebus, with researchers finding traces of the precious metal in the air almost 900 kilometers from the volcano.
