Less than a month later, another 5.7 magnitude earthquake hits Taiwan

A 5.7 magnitude earthquake hit the city of Hualien, in Taiwan, this Friday (26). This is the same place hit by an earthquake of more than 7 magnitude on April 3, less than a month ago.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter of this week’s tremor is located offshore, 19 kilometers from the coast, and at a depth of 25 kilometers.

Remember the first earthquake

A 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Taiwan early Wednesday morning, leaving 13 people dead and more than 1,000 people injured, according to local authorities.

The US Geological Survey mapped the earthquake and reported that it occurred about 21 kilometers from the city of Hualien. The distance from the surface was calculated at a depth of 34.8 kilometers.

The tremor was felt in the city of Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, located just under 200 kilometers from the epicenter. Due to the earthquake, several parts of the city were left without electricity.

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen said she “immediately instructed the administration to control the situation and understand the local impacts as quickly as possible.”

Tsai also advised the administration to “provide necessary assistance and work together with local governments to minimize the impact of the disaster,” according to a post on her Facebook page.

The capital is located in the region known as the ‘Pacific Ring of Fire’, an area that surrounds the Pacific Ocean and is characterized by intense tectonic activity. This ring is responsible for housing around 75% of the world’s active volcanoes and for recording most of the planet’s earthquakes.
