It is with great regret that the Legislative Assembly of Sergipe (Alese), regrets on behalf of all parliamentarians, the death of Maria Feliciana dos Santos (77), on this Saturday afternoon (27).
Known worldwide as the tallest woman (2.25 meters), she was born in the municipality of Amparo de São Francisco and from a young age stood out as a basketball player, singer and attraction during performances in circuses, cinema and TV stations, having won highlight at the age of 18 when she was crowned Queen of Heights on the program Hora da Buzina, presented by Chacrinha; subsequently participating in a tour with singer Luiz Gonzaga, the king of baião.
For the acting president of Alese, deputy Garibalde Mendonça (PDT), Maria Feliciana leaves her mark on history and in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. “In this moment of mourning, I extend my condolences to Maria Feliciana’s family and friends. May they find comfort in the memory of her extraordinary life and the legacy she left for all Sergipe people”, observes Garibalde.
Official mourning
The deputy and acting governor, Jeferson Andrade (PSD), stated that Maria Feliciana leaves a legacy for having designed the state of Sergipe in Brazil and the world.
“She has always been at the highest level of northeastern arts and culture. I present to the family, friends and admirers of the Queen of Altura, our sincere condolences and as acting governor, I decree three-day official mourning throughout the state of Sergipe for the death of Maria Feliciana, whose life story is immortalized in the memory of our people ”, highlights Jeferson Andrade.
Courage and challenges
In Aracaju, the State of Sergipe Building was opened in 1970 in the city center, but due to its height, it became known and is still called the Maria Feliciana Building. The eternal Queen of Height leaves a legacy of courage and challenges in recent years in which she had been facing health problems and experiencing financial needs.
In order to minimize the situation, Alese approved Law No. 3,948/1998, authored by the Executive Branch, granting a lifetime monthly pension to Maria Feliciana and in December 2022, state deputies approved, also authored by the Executive, Ordinary Law Project No. 299, increasing the value of the benefit, in recognition of this Sergipe woman who was nationally highlighted, projecting the state of Sergipe.
The place and time of the burial have not yet been announced by family members.
