The murder of Hariel it is a reflection and exposes the tone of false conciliation that anti-indigenous sectors have always proposed.

According to the Cimi note, “while indigenous peoples are in the Federal Capital mobilized in a democratic and legitimate way in defense of their rights, receiving slowness and treacherous words from the State, in traditional territories violence is rapid, ideological and lethal”.

“The murder of Hariel – says the Cimi – is a reflection and exposes the tone of false conciliation that anti-indigenous sectors have always proposed and continue to propose in their relationship with original peoples. There is no possible reconciliation between the rope and the neck other than the death of the hanged man.”

Here’s the note.

O Indigenous Missionary Council (Cimi) expresses deep indignation and sadness at the cruel murder of Hariel Palianoaged 26, occurred in the village Kakupliinside the Indigenous Land (TI) Ibirama La Klañoof the people Xoklengin Santa Catarina. The indigenous man’s body was found this Saturday morning, April 27th, in the portion of the TI incident in the municipality of Itaiópolis.

The news of the murder of Hariel caught by surprise and brought a lot of pain to the delegation Xokleng who is still on the road, returning from Brasília, where the indigenous people participated, during the week, in the Terra Livre Camp (ATL). While indigenous peoples are in the Federal Capital mobilized in a democratic and legitimate way in defense of their rights, receiving slowness and treacherous words from the State, in traditional territories violence is rapid, ideological and lethal.

Hariel was found lifeless, with marks of beating and with his body burned, on the banks of the highway that connects the municipalities of Santa Catarina to Doctor Pedrinho It is Itaiópolisabout 300 meters from the house where he lived with his mother and stepfather, the leader Xokleng from the Kakupli Village.

Parents’ house Hariel was shot at at the beginning of this month, on the 4th, a fact denounced by the community and documented by the Cimi. You can read the full report here. In recent months, after the approval and promulgation of Law 14701/2023, which makes the time frame effective, the Xokleng have suffered recurring shooting attacks in the region. In addition to the episode on the 4th, before the murder of Hariel there is at least one more complaint from the Xokleng with this nature of violence.

O Cimi draws attention to the fact that, throughout the week, the decision taken by the Minister Gilmar Mendeson April 22, which maintained the validity of the Law 14701/2023 and created a conciliation table to deal with the matter within the scope of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

The decision to Gilmar Mendes was understood as a victory for the sectors that oppose the demarcation of Ibirama La Klaño Indigenous Land and other indigenous lands in Brazil. In this sense, the decision in question became fuel for euphoria and hatred against indigenous peoples.

The murder of Hariel it is a reflection and exposes the tone of false conciliation that anti-indigenous sectors have always proposed and continue to propose in their relationship with original peoples. There is no possible reconciliation between the rope and the neck other than the death of the hanged man.

O Cimifor months, has been warning the authorities of the Three Powers of the Republic about the disastrous consequences arising from the approval and validity of the Law 14701/2023. The murder of Hariel fully demonstrates, more than ever, the necessary and urgent declaration of the unconstitutionality of the Law 14,701/2023.

O Cimi sympathizes with the families of Hariel Palianoas well as with the people Xokleng, Kaingang It is Guarani who live in Ibrirama La Klaño Indigenous Land.

O Cimiin this moment of deep pain and administrative and legal insecurities, vehemently repudiates this heinous crime and demands its immediate investigation, identifying and punishing those responsible.
