Paulo Futre turned to social media late this Sunday morning to react to the fact that André Villas-Boas had been elected the new president of FC Porto, putting an end to a 42-year ‘reign’ of Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa.
“Dear Porto fans, yesterday, you freely chose a new direction. I respect your decision. You will understand that, today, I am sad. Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa was the one who bet on a kid who would be loaned to Académica de Coimbra and who, three years later, was conquering Europe”, the former Portuguese international began by writing.
“I owe him everything. The words to convey the eternal gratitude I feel for him were probably not the best. You already know that I always spoke better on the field. You can ask the Germans in Vienna. A new chapter begins, with André Villas -Good. I wish he had waited for Pinto da Costa to withdraw to run and avoid the conflict in these elections”, he continued.
“I never had any doubt that he was a great candidate, and I also have no doubt that he will be a great president. He is the new captain of all Porto fans and he will count on my support, as could be expected. I end these lines by sending a Big hug to the person who changed my life”, he added.
Finally, the former striker left a special word for Pinto da Costa: “Who knows what would have become of me if you hadn’t crossed my path. Most likely today I would be the best driver in Montijo. Never I would have enjoyed the great career I had, nor would I have won the European Cup, a finalist for the Ballon d’Or, led the Portuguese national team as captain, been a great idol in the neighboring country, nor would I have met the mother of my children, in Cidade Invicta. “.
