Seven people died in an accident involving a tour bus that overturned on the BR-116 in Medina, in Vale do Jequitinhonha. The accident happened on Saturday night (27). Four victims died from the impact of the crash. The other three deaths occurred between transport and arrival at the reference hospital. One of the victims is a 26-year-old woman, born in Águas Belas, Pernambuco.
According to information from the Federal Highway Police, 32 people were injured and required medical attention. Of these, 29 people remain hospitalized at Hospital Santa Rita, located in Medina, and at Hospital Vale do Jequitinhonha, in Itaobim. The injured suffered multiple trauma, abrasions and open fractures. Four people needed to be transferred and are receiving care at the Teófilo Otoni Regional Hospital. A 2-year-old child is among those seriously injured.
The bus left Caruaru, Pernambuco, with its final destination in Campinas, São Paulo, passing through Vitória da Conquista in Bahia. In total there were 54 people in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Military personnel from the Fire Department, who were involved in the incident, stated that there was no record of people being trapped in the wreckage and that the bus overturned on a curve at km 85 of BR-116. The track was completely blocked for almost 7 hours and was only reopened in the early hours of this Sunday.
Authorities are still investigating whether or not the transport was regular. The Military Police also provided support in the incident.
According to the Civil Police, so far, the bodies of three of the four victims who died at the scene have already been released to their families. The body of a woman, still unidentified, continues to undergo necropsy examinations. Forensics were at the scene to identify and collect traces that could help in investigating the causes of the accident.
