A video in which a woman tells President Lula (PT) that she buys less food under the current government than when Jair Bolsonaro (PL) was president of the Republic is false. The record disseminated by the misleading pieces was recorded in 2022, and edited to omit a section in which the woman said exactly the opposite: that the amount paid by her was yielding less at that time than in 2010, in the last year of Lula’s second term.

Publications with misleading content accumulated 2,000 shares on Facebook and 20,000 likes on Instagram this Monday (29). Misleading articles also circulate on WhatsApp, where it is not possible to estimate the reach of the content (talk to Fátima).

Woman shows Lula [em abril de 2024] the reality of our country. See his reaction

The video in which women compare the quantity of products in two supermarket carts is not current and does not show women stating that they buy fewer products during the Lula government than during the Bolsonaro government.

The original recording was recorded on April 30, 2022, at a Lula event with women. Now it is being edited to omit what women, in reality, told Lula, then a pre-candidate for the presidency of the Republic, that in 2022 they would buy less food than in 2010.

However, the parameter used for comparison is not clear. During the event, one of the women initially says that the carts referred to the purchasing power of a minimum wage. Then, she says that the volume was related to a basic food basket. There are records in the press that say that the products displayed in the carts were equivalent to purchases of R$100, taking into account purchasing power in 2010 and 2022.

Photo shows comparison of purchasing power in 2010 and 2022 claimed by women during an event with Lula, then candidate for President of the Republic.

Understand the comparison based on data from Dieese (Inter-Union Department of Socioeconomic Studies):

  • In April 2010, the cost of the basic food basket comprised 48.78% of the net minimum wage (after the 7.5% Social Security discount);
  • In April 2022, the committed percentage was 61%;
  • In March of this year, the percentage, however, increased and became 62.67%.
  • The value of the minimum wage necessary to meet the needs of a family of four in April 2010, for example, was R$2,257.52 — 4.4 times the minimum wage at the time (R$510);
  • In the same month in 2022, the minimum required was R$6,754.33 — 5.5 times the official minimum wage (R$1,212);
  • In March 2024, the most recent data available, the required national floor was R$6,832.20 — 4.84 times the readjusted minimum of R$1,412
