Cyclist dies after falling from 15 meter high bridge between Cordeirópolis and Limeira

According to the Fire Department, Kelly Stefani de Oliveira Alves, 39 years old, was cycling with her husband and friends and lost her balance when she leaned against the wall of the Skeleton Bridge and fell. Teams from the firefighters and the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) went to the scene, but the cyclist succumbed to her injuries.

A EPTV, a TV Globo affiliate, went to the location this Monday (29) and found that the wall is low, posing risks to those traveling through the area. The bridge is a route used by fans of sports, such as cycling and more extreme activities, such as free-fall jumping.

The São Paulo Public Security Secretariat reported that the Civil Police is investigating the case, which was registered as a suspicious death and accidental death on duty at the Limeira Sectional Police Station.

Kelly’s body will be buried and cremated this Tuesday (30), in Rio Claro (SP), where she lived. She left behind a 7-year-old son.

A EPTV questioned governments from different spheres and a railway concessionaire in the region, but there was no consensus among them on who is responsible for the deactivated structure.

Limeira City Hall reported that the bridge is the responsibility of the logistics company Rumo and the state.

Rumo denied this, saying that the bridge is not part of the concession contract and the state said that the responsibility lies with the City of Cordeirópolis, which in turn said that the bridge belongs to the federal government.

When questioned, the federal government did not respond until the last update of this report.

Kelly was 39 years old, married and left behind a 7-year-old son. She currently worked as a packaging and labeling assistant at an orthopedic implant company.

Passionate about cycling and traveling, Kelly was part of the group “Patroas na Trilha Rio Claro MTB”, known in the city as “As Patroas”.

On one of Kelly’s social media profiles, one of the phrases is “No one explains God” and the other is “I love cycling.” According to friends, she had been cycling for around 7 years and had already gone to Ponte do Esqueleto on her bike many times.

On social media, friends and family left several messages expressing how much the woman was loved and will be missed.

“I’m here helpless with this news. I will never forget our friendship, always a partner, happy, happy with life. […] May God welcome you with open arms, my condolences to the family. I still can’t believe that you’re gone like that, what you’d love to do most in life”, wrote a friend.

Members of the group “As Patroas” also made several posts in honor of the cyclist.

Pedala Rio Claro also spoke out. “May God comfort all the friends and family. Rest in peace, Kelly.”
