“If you could have written a tragic script, I don’t think we could have written anything worse than what it was,” said the pilot, in an interview with BandNews FM Radio.

Senna’s death was just the culmination of a Grand Prix with tragedies in every act. On Friday, fellow Brazilian Rubens Barrichello was seriously injured after a shocking accident.

On Saturday, Austrian Roland Ratzenberger crashed into a protective wall after failing to negotiate the Villeneuve curve. At age 34, he was the first fatal victim of that weekend in Imola.

“It was a very difficult situation. It’s clear that from Saturday onwards a lot of people thought about ‘what do we do for Sunday, what don’t we do’. Then the moment Ayrton’s situation comes into play, it gets even worse”, recalled Christian.

What was done is that the Grand Prix was held in the same way, despite the pressure for it to be cancelled.

On the seventh lap, Senna’s car passes straight through the Tamburello curve at 210 km/h. The Brazilian becomes the second victim of the weekend.
