Four young people were sentenced by the Court of Aveiro, this Monday, to prison sentences, all of them suspended, for committing a crime of robbery committed a year ago and to compensate the offended party with 500 euros, to be paid jointly.

At issue was the theft of a gold thread that another young man, aged 17 at the time, was the victim of when he was in a commercial store on Avenida Lourenço Peixinho, in Aveiro.
Three of the four defendants benefited from special mitigation of sentences applied to young people under 18 years of age, having been sentenced to sentences of one year in prison and, in two cases, 9 months in prison.
The main defendant, who admitted at trial that he was the one who stole the golden thread, received the heaviest sentence, two years in prison. He had been in pre-trial detention since his arrest, having been released following the court’s decision to suspend his sentence for three years.
The group of judges decided to acquit the defendants of the crime of aggravated robbery, understanding that it was not carried out in a gang and previously agreed between everyone. In a comment after reading the ruling, the presiding judge noted that young people will have to “prove that they are capable of staying away from crimes”, the condition imposed to avoid serving time in prison.
