What they are sharing: video that would show a woman complaining about current food prices to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva during an event.
Estadão Verifica investigated and concluded that: is misleading, because the recording is not recent. The event shown in the video occurred in April 2022, when the president was Jair Bolsonaro (PL). At the time, Lula participated in a debate with women in Brasilândia, in São Paulo, about the cost of living and the right to food. The original video is recorded on the PT member’s YouTube channel.
Know more: On April 30, 2022, Lula participated in the event “Meeting Women with Lula for the right to food”, at Brasilândia, in São Paulo. Also present were Gleisi Hoffmann, national president of the PT, and Fernando Haddad, former mayor of the capital of São Paulo.
The event was broadcast live on several channels and was recorded on the Workers’ Party (PT) profile on Facebook, on the PT member’s YouTube channel and in press outlets. On Lula’s YouTube channel, it is possible to check the excerpt that went viral from minute 6:29 onwards. see below.
Posts on social media take the moment out of context to suggest that the incident was recent. “This is brave and true […] All that was left was to call him a liar”, states the caption. Comments also insinuate that the video was recorded during the current government. “Take it now, do the L (sic)”, says one user.
The woman in the shared excerpt says: “This is the reality, president. It doesn’t fill a cart: it’s bread, flour, a carton of milk, it’s the basics. Before, we would happily go to the market, go shopping, leave with a full cart. It was a reality that we liked. I have a very good memory. I would go to the market with my mother, fill the cart. Now, we practically close our eyes to pass through the corridors. It’s an endless sadness, because we go for a week, it’s a price. The next week, it is already double the value. And we don’t know where we’re going to end up.”
At the time, however, Lula was not president. In 2022, Bolsonaro would preside over the country. The specific event was attended by PT supporters – on the t-shirt of the woman speaking, it is even possible to read “PT Women”, with the symbol of the acronym printed on it.
How to deal with posts like this: the verified post shares a decontextualized video without date marking to create misinformation. In these cases, it is important to understand the context and when the content was recorded.

This rumor was checked because it appears among the main suspicious content circulating on Facebook. Estadão Verifica has access to a list of potentially false posts and data on their virality due to a partnership with the social network. When our checks find that information is misleading, Facebook reduces the scope of its circulation. Social network users and page administrators receive notifications if they have published or shared posts marked as false. A warning is also sent to anyone who wishes to post content that has previously been flagged as untrue.
A prerequisite for participating in the partnership with Facebook is obtaining certification from International Fact Checking Network (IFCN)which, in the case of Estadão Verifica, occurred in January 2019. The international association of fact checkers requires certified entities to sign a code of principles and make commitments in five areas: non-partisanship and impartiality; transparency of sources; transparency of financing and organization; transparency of methodology; and open and honest corrections policy.
