Police chief reveals that crime suspect wanted to use psychologist Fabiana Veras as a bridge to win back ex-girlfriend

The Civil Police of Rio Grande do Norte presented this Monday (April 29, 2024) the main motivation for the murder of psychologist Fabiana Fernandes Maia Veras, aged 42, in Assú, in the west of Rio Grande do Norte. According to delegate Valério Kürten, responsible for the case, the main suspect in the crime, the court employee João Batista Carvalho Neto, 44 years old, intended to use the victim’s friendship with his ex-girlfriend to try to rekindle the relationship.

The information was revealed after the testimony of João Batista’s ex-girlfriend, a Civil Police officer, who confirmed that she had been in a relationship with him for around two years, between 2020 and 2022. According to her, the breakup took place at the beginning of 2022 and, since then, João Batista would have made several attempts to contact him, including through Fabiana, in the hope of rekindling the relationship.

Suspect allegedly tried to access victim’s cell phone

The investigation indicates that João Batista also intended to access the psychologist’s cell phone to check whether she advised his ex-girlfriend not to resume the relationship. The Civil Police are still investigating whether he just intended to talk to Fabiana or whether the intention was to delete the messages.

Security camera footage shows suspect in victim’s home

Security cameras installed in the psychologist’s house recorded the image of a hooded man, wearing a mask, glasses and gloves, entering the place about two hours before the crime. The police confirm that it is João Batista.

Firearm was seized from the suspect

A firearm was seized from the suspect during his arrest in Natal, on April 24. The investigation found that the weapon was purchased illegally about 10 days before the crime.

Investigation continues

The police station responsible for the case will ask the Court to analyze data from João Batista’s cell phone, seeking to identify whether he had arranged a meeting with the victim or whether he arrived at her house by surprise. Expert and psychiatric reports will also be carried out to assist in the investigation.

Defense awaits reports

João Batista’s lawyer, André Dantas, informed that he has not yet defined his client’s line of defense and that he is awaiting medical analysis and the issuance of psychiatric reports.
