Police investigate death of woman after liposuction in hospital in Tijuca | Rio de Janeiro

Rio – The Civil Police opened an investigation to investigate the death of Roberta da Silva Mendonça, aged 42, following liposuction carried out at the Rio Day Hospital, in Tijuca, North Zone of Rio. The doctor who carried out the procedure was summoned to testify.

According to family members, Roberta underwent a 10-hour surgery on Wednesday (24). The next morning, she had purple spots on her body and felt sick, even fainting. The family claims that the clinic was not prepared for a major procedure and that it did not have an Intensive Care Center (ICU) for intubation.

On Thursday (25), the woman was transferred to Hospital Rios d’Or, in Freguesia, in the West Zone of Rio via an ambulance from the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu). She arrived at the unit in critical condition after suffering a cardiorespiratory arrest in the hospital where she was.

Roberta died on Saturday (27) and was buried this Monday (29) in the Pechincha Cemetery, in the West Zone. She leaves her husband and a 5-year-old daughter.

The case is investigated by the 19th DP (Tijuca). According to the Civil Police, the hospital where she underwent surgery was instructed to send all medical information related to the patient. The police officers also summoned the doctor responsible for the liposuction to provide clarification regarding the procedure adopted in relation to the woman.

Also according to Civil, the agents requested support from the Regional Council of Medicine of the State of Rio de Janeiro (Cremerj) to support inspection at the unit, as well as a history of possible irregularities. The investigation remains ongoing.

When asked about the matter, Rio Day Hospital did not respond. The space is open for manifestation.
