This Wednesday (1st), the day on which Ayrton Senna’s death turns 30, Globoplay launches “Senna by Ayrton”. In three episodes, the series tells the story of the three-time Formula 1 world champion through the driver’s eyes. The entire work was built based on archive images, in research into around 150 hours of recordings in Globo archives – and also from other Brazilian and foreign media outlets.

  • Farewell: Xuxa cries when remembering last call to Ayrton Senna: ‘That still stays in my head’
  • Art: Ayrton Senna’s niece prepares an exhibition with sculptures of the driver created at his mother’s request

“Senna by Ayrton” is directed by Rafael Pirrho and Rafael Timóteo, who also wrote the script alongside Camila Côrtes and José Emílio Aguiar. “Senna is a huge character in the history of Brazil and has already been very well biographed a few times. What we proposed, then, was that he narrate his own trajectory, based on long research through the many interviews he gave, not just to Globo. We always follow his point of view on everything he experienced”, says Pirrho.

The series opens with an interview carried out by singer Roberto Carlos with Senna for the artist’s end-of-year special in 1988. At the time, the driver had just become world champion and took a ride in the singer’s convertible car.

“On the road I prefer to stay on the right and go with a driver”, jokes Senna. “He’s also a comedian, right? So he sings a little now. Because I also like driving with someone singing”, says Roberto Carlos.
