O Registration in Quissanga for the general elections on October 9th will take place until May 15th, according to the decree approved by the Council of Ministers of Mozambique on April 23rd, in response to a request from the National Elections Commission (CNE).

Voter registration in Mozambique began on March 30 and ended on April 28, with the CNE scheduled to release the final numbers of registered voters across the country for Thursday.

Despite the insecurity in the region, the CNE registered 540,190 voters in Cabo Delgado, equivalent to 91.41% of what was expected, according to the latest data provided by Alberto José, member of the electoral commission in that province.

In the same decree, the Council of Ministers also sets out the extension of the voter registration period in Tanzania until May 5th, given the nine-day delay in the arrival of the equipment in that country.

Mozambique will hold general elections on October 9, including presidential elections, in which the current President of the Republic and leader of the Front for the Liberation of Mozambique (Frelimo), Filipe Nyusi, no longer competes, as he has reached the two-term limit set out in the Constitution.

More than 6.6 million voters have already been registered for the general elections on October 9 in Mozambique, of the more than seven million scheduled to register, indicates the latest update from the CNE.

At least 13 political formations have already signed up for the ballot, including two of the three parliamentary parties, the Mozambican National Resistance (Renamo) and the Democratic Movement of Mozambique (MDM).

The province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed insurgency for six years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.

The insurgency, which has intensified since December 2023 with several attacks on populations and armed forces, has led to a military response since July 2021, with support first from Rwanda, with more than 2,000 soldiers, and from southern African countries, freeing districts near gas projects.
