A Judicial Police (PJ) located and detained, in Lisbon, a 31-year-old foreign man, following an international arrest warrant issued by the Egyptian authorities. The man fled Egypt and was being sought to be tried for the crimes of qualified fraud and breach of trust.

According to a statement from the PJ, the crimes took place between January and April this year, in the context of gold trading. “The citizen had a jewelry store and allegedly defrauded eighteen people, through a gold buying and selling scheme, in which he led the injured parties to believe that they would obtain financial gains, through the sale of their gold”said the Judicial Police.

In total, the suspect embezzled 32,327 kg of gold, which is equivalent to approximately 1 million and 800 thousand euros. Thus, he “could face a prison sentence of 7 years”.

The detainee was brought before the Lisbon Court of Appeal and was placed in preventive detention awaiting the extradition process.
