Meryl Streep will return to the Cannes Film Festival after 35 years to receive an hourly Palme d’Or for her career achievements. Hollywood’s most decorated actress has been absent since she received the Best Actress award for “A Cry in the Dark” in 1989, during her only appearance at the French festival.

The tribute will take place at the opening ceremony of the 77th edition of the event, scheduled for May 14th, on the stage of the Grand Théâtre Lumière.

“It is with great honor that we announce Meryl Streep as the honoree for the 2024 edition of the Cannes Film Festival”, declared Pierre Lescure, President of the Festival. “Her unique presence and extraordinary talent have lit up screens for decades, and we are thrilled to welcome her back to the Croisette to celebrate her unparalleled career.”

Prize collector

Holder of three Oscar statuettes, out of a total of 21 nominations, Streep is acclaimed for her memorable performances in films such as “Kramer vs. Kramer”, “Sophie’s Choice”, “Madison Bridges” and “The Devil Wears Prada “. In 2012, the actress had already received the Honorary Golden Bear at the Berlin Film Festival.

In recent years, she has also stood out for her work on television series such as “Big Little Lies” and “Only Murders in the Building”, remembering the beginning of her career, when she won the 1978 Emmy for the historical miniseries “Holocaust “.

In her IMDb database account, Meryl Streep has no less than 185 international trophies for her talent as an actress.

Recognition for extraordinary career

The Honorary Palme d’Or, awarded by the organization of the Cannes Festival, is a special award given to personalities who have made a significant impact on the world of cinema. The honor has already been received by big names such as filmmakers Woody Allen, Clint Eastwood, Akira Kurosawa and Ingmar Bergman.
