The crime took place on a Tuesday, April 23, in the Surrão neighborhood, on the couple’s property. The suspicion of the Civil Police, which is investigating the case, is that they were murdered over a land dispute.

▶️ May 1st – Investigations indicate that the Military Police captain Helton John Silva de Souza, aged 48, is involved in the murder of the couple. Investigators in the case identified that he was with the suspects on the day the couple was murdered on the property where he lived.

Sought by g1, the defense of Caio de Medeiros, Genivaldo Lopes, Luiz Raposo, Helton John and Johnny de Almeida, reported that they declared themselves innocent and stated that they were not at the scene of the crime.

The lawyer had also already informed that the ammunition purchased by Jonnny de Almeida are intact and have already been placed at the “disposal of the police and Justice for return and examination, as well as the registered weapon that he possesses for examination to demonstrate that none of the ammunition that he bought was fired and his gun, which is registered, also did not fire.”

The businessman and agricultural technician, Caio Caio de Medeiros Porto, aged 32, is a neighbor of the couple and was in dispute over their property. He is investigated for having direct participation in the crime, suspected of planning and executing the crime.

The suspicion is that Jânio and Flávia were murdered due to a land dispute. Civil Police investigations reveal that there was “premeditation on Caio’s part in resolving the dispute through extreme measures”.

They indicate that, one day before the crime, on April 22, he threatened the couple with death and bought firearm ammunition. On the same day, he also threatened another of the couple’s neighbors, which “highlights Caio’s willingness to use lethal force to achieve his objectives.”

On April 23, he went to the couple’s property, accompanied by Genivaldo Lopes, Luiz Lucas and Captain Helton John, and shot the victims after they refused to reach an agreement, according to investigations.

“The analysis of the shots recorded on the video [áudio] indicated a total of six shots, distributed in a specific way: two sequential shots, a third shot after a brief interval, followed by two more spaced shots and a final shot. The beginning of the shooting was attributed to Caio, as evidenced by the sound of a blow to a pistol shortly after the second shot, an indication of failure, reloading or the participation of the second shooter.”

Caio’s close friend, Military Police Captain Helton John Silva de Souza, 48, is also being investigated for his role in the couple’s murder. Investigations indicate that he played “an important role in the fatal action” and was with Caio on the day of the shooting.

On the day of the crime, the captain served as coordinator of the state governor’s security team. But, six days after the crime, he was relieved of his duties on the security team and placed at the disposal of the PM.

Arrested on suspicion of participation in the crime, Genivaldo Lopes Viana, 53 years old, is a friend of Caio and was present on the day the victims were threatened with death, on April 22. He was also with the businessman during the purchase of ammunition.

Furthermore, he is suspected of having threatened a neighbor of the couple, along with Caio and Luiz Lucas Raposo da Silva, who is also in prison for involvement in the crime. The neighbor was the one who helped the victims the day they were shot. He was arrested on April 24, one day after the crime.

Luiz Lucas Raposo da Silva, 35 years old, was also arrested on April 24. He confessed to having accompanied Caio de Medeiros in the threat against the farmer couple’s neighbor and on the day of the shooting at Jânio and Flávia, according to Civil Police investigations.

According to investigations, Johnny de Almeida Rodrigues was with Caio and Genivaldo Lopes when purchasing firearm ammunition in a store in Boa Vista. The purchase receipt was issued in his name.

The police are investigating whether he played an active role in the threats and whether the ammunition he purchased was used by Caio to commit the crime.

The attack took place in the Surrão neighborhood, on the couple’s property, in the municipality of Cantá, north of Roraima. Jânio Bonfim was hit in the abdomen and died on the same day as the crime, on Tuesday (23).

His wife, shot in the head and mouth, died five days later, on Sunday (28), at the Roraima General Hospital (HGR), where she was admitted in a serious condition in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

After the crime, Civil Police agents began investigations and found that a witness who helped the couple was also threatened by the four men the day before the crime. Two men were arrested.

The witness and the farmer had agreed to plant beans on part of the land. On Monday (22), the witness was looking at the place where they would plant the plantation when the four men arrived and one of them was armed with a 380 caliber pistol.

According to the witness, who even spoke to the farmer about the threats, he stated that the land belonged to him and was fully documented.

“The victim told this witness that he owned the land and that he had all the supporting documentation, but that he had previously received other threats from the suspects and had even registered a Police Report about these threats”, said the municipality’s chief delegate, Ronaldo Sciotti.

Genivaldo Lopes, 53, and Luiz Lucas Raposo, 35, were arrested one day after the crime, on Wednesday (24). On that occasion, they were interrogated by the police chief, accompanied by a lawyer, and used their constitutional right to only speak in court.
