The torrential rains that have fallen uninterruptedly in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul since Monday have already caused the deaths of more than 40 people. According to Civil Protection, another 74 people are missing and 24,250 were left homeless. Of the state’s 496 municipalities, 235 have already been affected by heavy rains, which will continue for the next few days, and more than 170 roads were blocked this Friday due to falling slopes and collapsing bridges, making the work of rescue teams very difficult. . The most serious situation is in the Taquari River Valley, in the center of the state, where the rivers have risen more than 15 meters and left several municipalities isolated, without water, energy or communications. In Porto Alegre, the Guaíba River was two meters above the overflow level this Friday, flooding entire neighborhoods. In less than a year, four climatic phenomena killed more than 100 people in Rio Grande do Sul. But the state governor, Eduardo Leite, said that these floods will, unfortunately, be the most devastating.
