Portuguese rugby international Pierre-Mathieu Fernandes died this Saturday in France, aged 22, victim of a road accident, his club said in a statement, information confirmed moments later by the Portuguese Rugby Federation (FPR).

“It was with deep sadness and great emotion that we learned of the death of one of our players, Pierre-Mathieu Fernandes, in a road accident this morning. Pierre-Mathieu was only 22 years old”, wrote Vienne, without providing further details.

In addition to having already played for the main team, Fernandes became European runner-up in rugby with Portugal in 2021.

“FPR leaves its most sincere condolences to Pierre’s entire family and thanks them for their contribution to the sport”, wrote the organization, in a note of condolence published on its official channels.

Trained at Clermont, the Portuguese-descendant pillar currently played for Vienne Rugby, in Nationale 1, the French competitive third tier, after having played at Chambéry last season.
