Starting today, tomorrow, May 4th, and until May 12th, Chamusca hosts the biggest party in the Municipality – Ascension Week’24. The official opening ceremony is scheduled for 3 pm, at the Municipality’s stand. For nine days there will be no shortage of great concerts and shows, snacks, show cooking, folklore, crafts, traditional music, musical entertainment, workshops, exhibitions of producers and economic agents.

Returning to the big stages Mickael Carreira opens the main stage of Ascensão today, at 10pm, a week after the presentation of his new tour “Vida”, at Coliseu dos Recreios. Follow Soraia Ramos, on Sunday, May 5th, this year’s international poster artist. The Cape Verdean singer and songwriter, who recorded duets with Calema and Carolina Deslandes, received the award for best female artist in Central Africa in 2020.

A Typical Scalabitana Orchestra on stage on Monday, May 6th, with the characteristic costumes of Ribatejo since 1948, to perform with a repertoire inspired by Portuguese folklore and popular music. Follow Rita Rocha, on Tuesday, May 7th, the 17-year-old Portuguese singer, songwriter and instrumentalist, who performed to the public in 2021 on The Voice Kids, the same year in which she released her platinum-selling debut single “Mais ou Menos Isto”. During the fair, it will be possible to have fun with the sounds of prestigious DJs, on the Youth Stage, or visit the gastronomic space, with a stage dedicated to ethnography and where you can taste various delicacies, in a party and festival atmosphere.

The maximum exponent of Ascension Week is the traditional Bull Entry in Thursday of Ascension, May 9th, municipal holiday, where the bullfights run along the main artery of the town from Areal to the Centenary Praça de Toiros da Chamusca. This day starts very early with the Traditional Espiga Harvest, in the region’s fieldsfollowed by Mass and Blessing of the Goods of the Earth and Animals, next to the Main Church.

With free entry, the Ascension Week brings together all the cultural and gastronomic passions of the region and brings together thousands of visitors annually. Remember that in 2023, the town of Chamusca hosted the Ascensão fair more of 150 thousand visitors, who came from the most diverse regions of the country to learn about the roots, culture and tradition of the town considered “The Heart of Ribatejo” and to enjoy the most varied music and theater shows, folklore and sporting events, as well as traditional gastronomy of the region, taverns, exhibitions crafts and regional products, wild festival, equestrian or bullfighting activities, culture and especially tradition.

Ascension Bullfighting Fair

A Ascension Bullfighting Fair is one of the great highlights, with two bullfights taking place on May 4th and May 9th, respectively Saturday (5pm) and Ascension Thursday (6pm).

On May 4th, the Centennial Bullring of Chamusca will be the stage for a Portuguese Bullfight, in which the Grupo de Forcados Amadores do Aposento da Chamusca celebrates its 40th anniversary. To mark the date, former and current members of the GFAAP will catch six bulls from Ganadaria Canas Vigouroux. In the square will be the knights João Moura Caetano, Marcos Bastinhas and Miguel Moura.

On the 9th of May, the Centennial Bullring of Chamusca hosts the Tradicional Mixed bullfight of Ascension Thursday. In the square will be the knights Francisco Palha, António Telles (son) and the matador António Ferreira. Taking part will be the two groups of forcados from the Municipality: the Grupo de Forcados Amadores da Chamusca and the Forcados Amateurs do Aposento da Chamusca. During the race, four bulls from Ganadaria Passanha will be handled on horseback and two bulls from the Murteira Grave cattle ranch will be handled on foot.

The Eng. Jorge Duque Trophy will also be awarded for the best handle and the Dr. João Duque Trophy for the Best Handle on Horseback. The Acensão Bullfighting Fair will be a party, conviviality and celebration, of figures and young values ​​and with three postín galadarias!
