Aston Martin expected a better result at the Formula 1 Miami GP, but Fernando Alonso finished the race in P9 and Lance Stroll was only in P17.
Mike Krack, team principal: “Two hard-earned points in a race dominated by track position and traffic. Our starting positions held us back today. Fernando’s race was simple and the Virtual Safety Car time proved useful as he struggled with the hard tires. He eventually managed to progress to P9. With Lance, maybe we stalled a little bit at the beginning, trying to overtake (Yuki) Tsunoda, and we didn’t recover from the position we lost on the track. We will learn these lessons before the start of the European season,” he concluded.
Alonso: “After a difficult day yesterday, it was good to leave this weekend with some points for the team. We were a little lucky with the timing of the Virtual Safety Car and then the real Safety Car joining the grid. We then took the opportunity to install medium tires. This changed our strategy a little and allowed us to have some good disputes. I enjoyed the race and it seems like we showed a little more performance in the race than in the qualifying session. We have some work to do to improve our performance in the upcoming races. I’m happy for Lando (Norris). It’s always special to get your first win,” he added.
Stroll: “It wasn’t a great race today. We made an early stop and a few laps later the Safety Car was deployed, so the cars that stayed out benefited a lot from that. This really compromised our strategy. From then on I managed to overtake some cars and crossed the finish line in 13th, but I was penalized for overtaking (Alex) Albon and lost some positions. We’ll look into this later, but it seems like a strange penalty. We will work hard in the coming weeks to find more rhythm in the car for Imola”, concluded the Canadian.
