After having her preventive detention revoked by the Rio de Janeiro Court, the hairdresser Erika de Souza Vieira Nunes42 years old, defended himself against the accusations attempted robbery and vilification of a corpse. She was arrested last month, when she was caught taking the body of her uncle, the elderly Paulo Roberto Braga, aged 68, in a wheelchair to a bank branch in Bangu, where tried to take out a loan in his name.

In an interview with Fantasticshown this Sunday (5), the woman detailed what her days in prison were like and stated that did not realize that the family member passed away during the journey from home to the financial institution.

Those were horrible days away from my family. I lived moments in my life that I could no longer bear. Very difficult. It was horrible, I didn’t realize my uncle was dead. […] I’m not that person they’re talking about, I’m not that monster.”

On the program, Erika detailed that she maintained a “great” relationship with uncle, who had lived with her for years. “He was independent, he did what he wanted. He had a good mind. He wasn’t in a wheelchair and I wasn’t his caregiver.”

When asked if she didn’t think the elderly man was too weak to leave the house that April 16, she said they both went to the bank at his request. According to her, during the journey to the agency everything was fine.

In the images captured by security cameras from the day, it is possible to observe that Erika held the man’s head, who seemed to have no vitality to support the limb. In the interview, she explained that she asked her uncle if he would be more comfortable if she supported his head. “I asked if that would be better, he said yes.”

“As I undergo treatment, I took zolpidem, sometimes I took more than one. [O esquecimento] I don’t know if it was the effect of the medicine I had taken that day”, he said.

Before his death, Paulo Roberto remained hospitalized in a state health unit for a week. According to the niece, doctors did not offer guidance at discharge.

“They gave me a prescription for a five-day medicine, I bought the medicine and the diaper. I thought he would get better, that it was just pneumonia.”

What the Court says

In the decision that granted freedom to the woman, handed down last Thursday (2), the judge in charge of the 2nd Criminal Court of Bangu, Luciana Mocco, responded to the complaint from the Public Ministry of Rio de Janeiro (MPRJ), making Érika defendant for the crimes of attempted fraud It is corpse vilification. She is also investigated, in another investigation, by manslaughter — when there is no intention to kill. This process is still ongoing at the Civil Police, which will still decide whether to indict Érika for this crime.

At the time, the judge also defined that Erika must comply with the following precautionary measures:

  • Monthly attendance at the court registry, to inform and justify your activities or possible change of address. In this case, the new address must be informed before moving, under penalty of new arrest;
  • If there is a need for hospitalization for mental health treatment, a medical report must be presented;
  • Prohibition of being absent from the District for a period of more than 7 days, except with express authorization from the court.

Remember the case

The elderly Paulo Roberto Braga, 68 years old, was taken dead, in a wheelchair, by his niece Érika Souza Vieira Nunes, 42, to a bank branch in Bangu, Rio de Janeiro, on April 16th.

At the time, the woman tried to use the elderly man’s name to release a loan of R$17,000.

Site employees noticed that the man was visibly pale and did not respond to commands and notified security authorities.
