The 313 m² duplex, in Vila Mariana, in São Paulo, underwent a complete transformation to have a more functional and integrated layout and serve the young couple with two young daughters. The family has always had affection for the apartment, as it was the owner’s parents’ home and where he lived for almost his entire life.

“They always knew that the property had a lot of potential due to its great size and location, as well as a great desire to change the entire configuration of the plant to modernize it”, says the architect Simone Saccabin front of the office Si Saccab Architecture & Interior Design (@si_saccab).

As the building is old, it was necessary to redo the entire hydraulic part of the apartment, design a pressurization system to serve the upper floor, which had a major problem with lack of pressure, and also redo all the electrical part, since the load was not it would support all the equipment and appliances of the new residents.

Furthermore, it was necessary to demolish everything and build again, change the position of the stairs, redo the roofs and replace all the frames.

The project was inspired by concepts of contemporary, functionality, integration, comfort and natural light, also based on a palette of neutral tones, with the use of wood, cement, leather and occasional touches of earthy tones. “It’s like being in a house on top of a building”, celebrates Simone.

From the entrance hall, the apartment already surprises with the work of art by Tomie Otake suspended on the steel cables and leaning against the open element in the form of a brise, welcoming guests in an impressive way. The living, dining and home theater environments were integrated, with tones of nature and different textures.

The gourmet area is a highlight of the project, as it is one of the most desired spaces by residents, barbecue and cooking fans. With a large porcelain countertop, barbecue, cooktop on the island counter, ice machine and brewer, the space was designed to accommodate eight stools around this central volume – an ideal area for socializing and cooking.

Visual continuity was reinforced by the use of the same vinyl lining as the living room, maintaining integration and creating an inviting environment to welcome friends and family.

The kitchen was planned as an extension of the social area, with similar tones and textures to ensure visual continuity. The light gray cabinets and white countertop, in addition to the natural oak block, add a welcoming touch.

The lunch area, positioned in an integrated manner with the kitchen, with a table set into one of the pillars, serves as the main support for children’s meals and breakfast.

A sculptural element in the environment, the staircase was designed mixing the lightness of metalwork with the brutality of concrete. Simone explains that the first flight (first five steps) was built of masonry and covered with cement texture, giving it that “raw” appearance.

The fifth step is different from the first, creating a platform for the couple’s bar, where they collect fun pieces and whiskey bottles. The second flight contrasts with lighter metalwork.

“To make this ultra-thin bent sheet work, it needed to be anchored inside the wall, using a built-in concrete support beam”, he reports.

The large children’s suite accommodates the two young daughters, which can be divided in the future when they grow up. In this way, two entrance doors to the room, two bathrooms, closets on both sides of the room, two air conditioners, separate lighting circuits were designed, so that in a few years only a drywall separation wall will be built and redone. the headboard wall of both bedrooms.

The master bath, considered a true refuge, has a large shower stall with two showers and a soaking tub, as well as an outdoor garden that brings a natural touch to the environment.
