Police investigate death of 4-year-old child who was run over on Ilha do Governador | Rio de Janeiro

The police are investigating the death of a 4-year-old girl who was run over, on Ilha do Governador, by a taxi, on Monday (6). The child was on the sidewalk with her mother and sisters when she was hit.

Madalena Trajano Moreira was going to the neighborhood Family Clinic to re-register for Bolsa Família (get vaccinations and weigh in).

While they were waiting on the sidewalk to cross Estrada das Canárias, a taxi drove onto the sidewalk and ran over the mother and children.

The taxi driver, identified as Luiz Carlos Ribeiro, was in a state of shock and the person who helped the child was an app driver.

Madalena was very injured and was rescued by members of the public to the Evandro Freire Municipal Hospital and from there she was transferred to the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital.

The transfer was made, but, at Getúlio Vargas, after hours in hospital, Madalena could not resist and died in the early hours of Tuesday (7).

In a note, the Municipal Health Department reported that Madalena was admitted to Evandro Freire and received all the necessary care to stabilize her condition and was then transferred with priority to a unit specializing in pediatric neurosurgery, Hospital Getúlio Vargas. Still according to the secretariat, it is not true that there was a lack of material for service at Evandro Freire.

The State Department of Health reported that the patient arrived in a very serious condition and was promptly attended to by a multidisciplinary team. After undergoing a computed tomography exam, which found no indication for surgery, the patient was referred to the pediatric ICU for intensive treatment.

Despite all the team’s efforts, the girl died due to serious injuries. The management of the Getúlio Vargas State Hospital said that it is available to provide any additional clarifications to the family and sympathizes with the loss.

The case was registered at the 37th DP (Ilha do Governador). The Civil Police said that the investigation is ongoing and agents are carrying out efforts to determine the facts and circumstances of the crime.

The wake and burial of the girl’s body will take place this Thursday (9), at the Cacuia Cemetery.
