Dinho Vital was shot dead yesterday, after a fight at a party; PM alleges that police officers retaliated and shot

Mary Beltrão, widow of former councilor Wander Alves Meleiro, known as Dinho Vital, said that her husband did not return shots fired on the banks of BR-262, in Anastácio, a city 122 kilometers from the Capital. “He didn’t even have time to shoot, no shot came from his gun,” she said.

Mary, Dinho’s parents and other family and friends are already at the Anastácio City Council, where his body will be laid to rest in the afternoon. Everyone is very shaken and his mother needed medical attention, received in the office of the president of the Chamber, Ademir Alves Guilherme (PSD).

Dinho Vital was shot dead, aged 40, yesterday, after leaving lunch to celebrate the city’s 59th anniversary, held at Chácara do Gaúcho, near BR-262. The event is traditionally held after the parade, bringing together politicians from the municipality. This year, several pre-candidates for mayor and the House of Laws were present.

Mary did not talk about the fight that preceded the death. As determined by Campo Grande News Yesterday, the disagreement began when Mayor Nildo Alves de Albres (PSDB) announced that he would launch former mayor Douglas Figueiredo as a pre-candidate for Mayor of Anastácio. As reported by the website O Pantaneiro, several people involved in the confusion were said to be drunk. “They knocked him to the ground and kicked him, then he left,” he said.

The widow says that after the fight, her husband left the party and went home, returning along the highway. “I lost track of him, I went in another car, we were going different ways and, after I came back, I saw that he was about 300 meters away from the party”, she recalled.

It was then that he saw a silver car, in which the shooters were traveling, leaving the party. Dinho Vital was outside the car, in front.

The widow reports that the men started shooting when they were still passing by the back of the former councilor’s Fiat Toro. Dinho was still trying to get back into the vehicle. Apparently, according to her, to get the gun, which would be regularized, he says. Before that, however, it was hit. She says she heard at least six shots. The widow claims that her husband was not armed at the party.

Her 6-year-old son was close to her, so she ran away from the gunshots and called for her mother-in-law. When she looked back at the crime scene, the men in the silver car had already fled.

Dinho’s death was a ‘shut up’, he knew a lot”, said Mary.

The widow says that her husband had defects like everyone else, “but he was an excellent father”. According to her, Dinho “died defending the city, he had his ideals, this discussion was just an excuse, because no shot was fired from his gun”, she stated.

The president of the Chamber, Ademir Alves Guilherme, remembered the last conversation he had with Dinho Vital, yesterday. “He called me and we talked about the city’s political destiny,” he said, explaining that they considered launching Dinho’s mother as a candidate for mayor.

“This case brings a lot of hatred, it sends a very bad scenario about the political class to the city; the population was already a little discredited, after that, people are disbelieved with politicians.”

In a statement, the PM (Military Police) press office reported that the shots were fired by two off-duty police officers, called by party participants to intervene in the event of an armed person at the scene.

Still in a statement, the PM claims that the military saw a person armed with a pistol, who would be Dinho Vital. They announced that they were police officers and ordered him to put the weapon on the ground. “(…) even so, the man did not comply with the police’s legal order and, with a gun in hand, walked towards the police officers.” The action will be investigated through an IPM (Military Police Inquiry).
