Kazakhstan won exactly half of the gold medals available at the recent ASBC Asian Under-22 and Youth Boxing Championships in Astana. Of the 25 participating nations, 16 acquired at least one medal in the busy and long championships in the capital of Kazakhstan.

The Kazakhs won a total of 25 of the 50 gold medals at the championships held at home, ahead of India, which won 12 titles in Astana. Uzbekistan came third this time with its 11 gold medals, but China and India both managed a title in Astana.

Among the under-22 boxers, hosts Kazakhstan scored a big win with their 14 gold medals and led the team in this age group. India proved its development with its 7 gold medals at U22 level, while surprisingly Uzbekistan won only four titles.

Kazakhstan was also dominant in the youth age group, its 11 gold medals taking the team to the highest position in the rankings. Uzbekistan’s 7 youth gold medals meant the country could surpass the Indians with their five age group titles from 2006-2007. China returned to the youth competition with an impressive title and Iran’s new super heavyweight (+92kg) star dominated his division.

In total, 15 countries won at least one medal in the U22 age group in Astana, where China, Mongolia, Tajikistan and Afghanistan had finalists. Iran, Kyrgyzstan, Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Jordan, Singapore and Chinese Taipei were the other countries that won bronze medals in the U22 part of the competition.

Among youth boxers, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Mongolia, Jordan and Chinese Taipei won silver medals in Astana. Vietnam, South Korea and the Philippines were the other bronze medalists among boxers born in 2006 and 2007.

Afghanistan achieved its first silver medal at any Asian Boxing Championships since 1995 and the competition set several new records in Astana.
