On Victory Day, Putin played the nuclear trump card again and Ukraine came closer to joining the EU (the 806th day of war)

-

This Thursday, Russia celebrated Victory Day, which marks the surrender of Nazi troops to Soviet forces and, consequently, the end of the Second World War, 79 years ago. As usual, Vladimir Putin spoke in Red Square, at a military ceremony attended by nine thousand soldiers, including soldiers who were on the front line, according to Lusa.

Taking advantage of the symbolism of the anniversary, as is his custom with important dates and events in the country’s history, the Russian President began by recognizing the merit of a “generation of winners” who, “with courage, fight against difficulties”, alluding to the Russian soldiers who went to fight in Ukraine.

As on Tuesday, during the inauguration for his fifth presidential term, Putin admitted that “Russia is going through a critical moment”, reinforcing that the country’s destiny “depends on each person”. Regarding the escalation of tensions with Ukraine and its Western allies, the head of state assured that “Russia will do everything to avoid a global confrontation”.

At the same time, he once again highlighted the readiness of his nuclear arsenal, a speech that has punctuated the more than two years of conflict and which has gained prominence again in recent days as he takes office for a new term. “We will not allow anyone to threaten us”, he stressed.

Ukraine in the EU in 2030?

Vladimir Putin announced again that he will order “nuclear military maneuvers” in the “near future”. Already this afternoon, he stated that both Russia and Belarus have already begun preparations for joint exercises with tactical nuclear weapons, according to the Interfax news agency.

At the same time, and while awaiting the arrival of the entire latest US aid package, blocked for almost half a year due to an impasse in Congress, Ukraine is increasingly closer to European integration. This Thursday, on the occasion of Europe Day, which celebrates the presentation of the historic “Schuman Declaration”, on May 9, 1950, which paved the way for the formation of the EU as we know it today, the President of the European Parliament said that the Ukraine’s accession negotiations are expected to begin in June.

In an interview with the newspaper ‘Ukrainska Pravda’, Roberta Metsola said she was “optimistic about the possibility of the negotiating framework being approved by EU member states in June”.

In this regard, the EU ambassador in Kiev, Katarina Mathernova, considered the possibility of the country’s entry into the bloc in 2030 as “very realistic”, previously mentioned by the president of the European Council, Charles Michel.
