The Mato Grosso Court of Justice denied three habeas corpus filed by the defense of military police officer Edvan de Souza Santos and kept him in prison. He is accused of several murder crimes, including that of the director of the Environmental Sanitation Service of Rondonópolis (Sanear), Terezinha Silva de Souza.

The decision was given by the Second Criminal Chamber in a session held on Wednesday morning (8). The judges unanimously followed the vote of the rapporteur, José Nogueira Zuquim.

Terezinha’s murder occurred on January 15, 2021, when the victim was heading to work.

At the time, the truck she was in was approached by two men on a motorcycle, who shot the vehicle several times. Terezinha was shot seven times in the head and chest.

In the habeas corpus, the defense claimed that the defense was being restricted in the investigations, stating that it did not have access to the link to the breach of telematic secrecy. He added that the PM is a first-time offender and has a good record.

In the vote, the rapporteur stated that access to investigation evidence was not restricted or denied. According to Zuquim, there was only a change in the access link, with a new one being made available to the defense that prevents the editing of documents.

Murder in Rondonópolis

It was the morning of January 15th and, just like on other days of the week, Terezinha caught a ride with the driver who would take her to work at Sanear’s headquarters. However, the journey was interrupted around 7am.

The driver had just stopped at a red light on Rua Major Otávio Pitaluga, in the city center, when two men on a motorcycle approached the car. Without saying anything, one of them pulled out a gun and shot Terezinha with seven shots, most of them to the head. Then they fled.

According to the Civil Police, Edvan was the driver of the motorcycle. He was identified after police located the motorcycle in Pedra Preta.

Other suspects have not yet been identified. The investigations remain ongoing.
